Chronicles of a Sorcerer King – Week 4.3

Oi!

Oi!

Another week, another dungeon explored….well sort of. This was an interesting dungeon.

When we left off, the heroes started on level 2 of the Gardens of Tarn dungeon. I had 39 threat and a full hand of cards.

We drew map 25, The arena. I chose monster option 1 because it included all monsters in the eldritch category and I have those upgraded to silver level.

I placed the master sorcerer and a master skeleton were near the ogre. The other 3 skeletons were on the balconies in the 2nd room. The heroes entered the first room, swarmed around the first bone heap, and searched it. A copper chest was found, but no treasure was inside. Only potions for everyone (except Sir Valadir who got cash). My turn I did nothing. The heroes moved forward more to the bone heap in the corner of the first room. They kept most of the spawn points covered. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but they did it. Sir Valadir searched the bone heap and I turned him into a monkey with a curse from the monkey god. On top of that, the bone heap was empty. This paragraph is getting long, so I will go onto the next!

The heroes didn’t like that Valadir was a small simian. They all moved around him to protect him and feed him bananas. Kirga took the front line and readied a guard order. The guard kept me back. I didn’t move my sorcerer at all. The master beside him inched forward hoping to draw some of the heroes out into a more vulnerable position so I could spawn some monsters behind them.

My plan worked too, just not as I hoped. With a master skeleton in clear view, the heroes made attack runs on him and killed him. He failed his undying roll and stayed dead. They moved back into positions and had decent coverage on my only spawn points. On my turn, I waited. I went through the overlord deck at this point and gained 3 conquest for doing so. Give thanks to the evil genius card. Amen.

The next turn, the non-ape heroes made an attack run on the sorcerer who was a little harder to hit. Silhouette came out first and I put her in a spiked pit in the spot that gave the best line of sight to the sorcerer. She ran back to safety, but not to a spot that gave her good line of sight. Kirga went next, shot, and returned to her same space in front of Sir Monkey. Thorn followed and dealt the death blow to the master who failed his undying check. He moved into a poor spot too.

This left an opening by the level’s entrance glyph for a skeleton war party! Freshly spawned, the skeletons surged out and killed Silhouette who was next to Valadir. I made a window around the monkey, but all my monsters were spent. I moved the master ogre down some to make him more accessible.

Next turn Thorn battled and used blast plus lots to fatigue to kill the master skeleton. The blast damage from his attack also put each white skeleton at 4 life. Silhouette returned and killed another. Kirga eliminated the last. At the end of their turn, the monkey curse wore off and Valadir was back to himself.

Patience being a virtue, I sat back and watched.

With the meat shield back to life, Valadir battled and fatigue moved out to the ogre. Two swings later with his one-handed slasher and enchanted shield and the ogre was down about half.

Over the next two turns everyone took a shot at the master ogre who, upon death made his undying check and returned. I managed to summon a sorcerer circle and beastman war party as well. Things were culminating to a point here. The beastman leader was giving a command bonus to the master ogre. I moved the ogre so he was in melee with Valadir, Kigra, and Silhouette. I played a rage card to give him two attacks. The Ogre swung twice and killed Kirga and Valadir. I used the knockback to move Silhouette into a position so my 2 skeletons on the balcony could shoot at her. They killed her as well. The two sorcerers in the back wounded Runemaster Thorn pretty good, but the master skeleton that jumped off his balcony and took a range 5 shot at him from afar was enough to send him back to town.

That’s it! All the heroes were back at town and the dungeon was closed. The final conquest count was heroes 26 versus Overlord 55. It was a brutal dungeon. The heroes were none too happy with the turn of events.

It was a good day to be a Sorcerer King, although the sight of the heroes down in the dumps left a dirty taste in my mouth. Until our next adventure, this is the Sorcerer King wishing you a Merry Christmas!

  1. I don’t think that killing all the heroes closes down the dungeon. I’m pretty sure that unless they decide to flee they can still wander back in and keep fighting their way through if they so choose.

That being said, on a level where you have naught but eldritch monsters and have both Evil Genius and Trapmaster choosing to flee may have been a great idea anyway.
