Goreshade Curses the Dark Prince

Wohoo!! Finally got a game in with Epic Goreshade. I was getting sick of thinking about using him on the field. It wasabout time to put all this theorymachine to the test!

The game was Mark 2 – 25points – Cryx versus Khador

My cryxian cohort looked something like this:

Epic Goreshade the Cursed with Reaper & Nightwretch
3 Black Ogruns
6 Bane Thralls
6 Bile Thralls
Bane Lord Tartarus
Necrotech & Scrap Thrall

My opponent was LTC’s dastardly laaronml and his khadorian brutes:

Vladamir, Dark prince of Umbrey with Drago & Destroyer
Greylord Teirnon
4 Widowmakers
Great Bears

Deployment looked like this:

Khador Turn 1
I gave deployment and the first turn to Laaronml. He advanced everything forward save the widowmakers. The great bears took position behind the trees ahead of them, Vlad hung back with the jacks. The greylords moved behind the widowmakers and cast an ice cloud on the snipers to give them some cover.

Cryx Turn 1
I began by running the biles through the gap ahead of them on the left. Then I brought the reaper close behind them to fill most of the rest of the gap. The banes moved forward some and swarmed around the rock. As this was the first time using them and Tartarus, I wasn’t 100% sure what to do with either unit. Tartarus moved behind them. The black ogruns moved forward 6 inches. The nightwretch followed behind them. Goreshade channeled occulation through the bonejack on the black ogrun. The necrotech and scrap thrall just tagged along behind Goreshade for the game.

Khador Turn 2
Vlad cast signs and portents. The two warjacks advanced again. The destroyer tried to fire on the biles and it deviated back toward itself destroying a large patch of grass and some bugs. The great bears hung out behind the trees still and the grey lords cast another cloud on the widowmakers.

Cryx Turn 2
Goreshade upkept the occulation on the black ogruns. I advanced a little more and tried to parse out my distances with everyone. I ran the bile thralls forward again. Goreshade tried to cast phantom hunter on the biles but was just out of range! The black ogruns moved forward 6 inches, tried to fire on the widowmakers, but were just out of range! Again with that!! Argh!! Tartarus moved to the left of the banes giving him a view of the field.

Khador Turn 3
Vlad cast signs and portents. The destroyer fired on the biles and killed 4 of the putrid pus bags. I appointed a new bile thrall as the unit commander. The widowmakers gave up their position and ran across the field to stand in front of the trees where the great bears were chillin. The greylords cast their spray attacks on the stealthed ogruns killing 1 and wounding another.

Cryx Turn 3
For starters, two focus went on the reaper and one on the nightwretch. The first move was done by the big helljack. He advanced and fired the harpoon at the destroyer. It hit and damaged (both boosted) and it dragged him into melee range. Goreshade cast phantom hunter on the bane thralls giving them the ability to ignore the rock in the midst of them. The bane thralls charged the destroyer. If I was thinking ahead I would have positioned Tartarus accordingly, but I wasn’t. 3 banes engaged the jack and the rest milled about behind them. It was a poor showing on the armour 20 jack. I’m too used to playing squishy armies! One bile thrall purged on the widowmakers killing all four. The other received a promotion. The black ogruns charged the greylords killing two. As a final move, the nightwretch ran right in front of Drago, just out of melee range, to block his charge lane.

Khador Turn 4
The destroyer was given a focus allotment and began swinging….just after Vlad cast signs and portents and moved in front of the great bears hideout. The destroyer killed two bane thralls. The great bears left their secret lair and charged the nightwretch. I forgot these guys were on the board and had no idea what they could do. Well, I saw them wreck the nightwretch. I list that as one of their capabilities and they did it well! Drago charged the bane thralls, but got tripped up going over the difficult terrain and came up short.

Cryx Turn 4
I saw a neat window here for an assassination on Vlad. There were actually two windows, but one seemed better than the other. It was a long shot though and would have to work perfectly. Three focus went on the reaper. Goreshade activated and moved so he could see the destroyer through the melee. He cast curse of shadows (boosted) and hit the destroyer making him physically insubstantial. The reaper charged Vlad. He boosted to hit and needed 8 or better. Thankfully he hit! My dice get finicky on these assassination runs (see my most recent battle against Cygnar). Dice = damage on the helldriver and by buying an additional attack (the helldriver has sustained attack) Vlad was sent to the old witch.

Aftermath
WOW!! What a game! If that assassination run failed, it was going to become a very dicey couple of turns for me. I had no real good way to remove the great bears and the last grey lord in a single turn meaning something was goign to get hurt. On top of that, the destroyer and drago were a hard nut to crack. I don’t know how hurt the destroyer was, but I imagine it would have taken a substantial bit more effort to finally wreck him. Both of us forgot a few key rules here and there, but in the end it probably balanced out. It was a great first game of Mark 2 for me. Thanks laaronml!

  1. It was pointed out to me that phantom hunter can only be cast on Goreshade’s battlegroup. True (thanks mellchia). Fortunately, under the circumstances, the 3 banes that made it into base contact with the destroyer were in front of the rock to begin with. The 2 behind it would have walked into the rock and stopped and the last couldn’t find a spot to squeeze in and milled about. In the actual game the 3 banes that didn’t make it into combat just milled around behind the front 3 and didn’t have any impact on the game.

The point -> Its all food for thought

  2. I do think this is a most incredible website for proclaiming great wonders of Our God!
