Malifaux Special Terrain Tutorials – Mountain “Soulstone Bags”

Technically, I don’t think this is actually terrain. Close enough though, it’s still a special rules marker that you can interact with. Soulstone bags, in malifaux, are 2 markers that you place at the beginning of the game, one near each deployment zone, allowing you to nab a few extra soulstones for crushing your enemies beneath your feet. If you’re real fast, or your enemy is real slow, you might even snag THEIR soulstone bag for a double threat. But wait, don’t get too excited, you have to make them first! Some people just use a paper cut out to represent this, I say that’s stupid and those people should feel bad. With a little time and some easy to find supplies, you can have +2 to your immersion attribute. Boom -

Making something like this will also almost guarantee that you’ll actually use these interesting rules which might otherwise fade into obscurity. Anyway, let’s get to it. Start off with some 30mm bases, gluing on some broken up corkboard for the rocky outcropping that your bags will sit on. Then roll out a ball/egg shape of gray stuff to represent the greater portion of your bag, I decided to have one bag standing up and another spilling out. Bonus points will be awarded if you put one of those weirdo little goblins from golden axe carrying the soulstone bag . A successful interact representing smashing them until soulstones pop out.

When that has started to set, you can put some indents in it to represent the ripples of the cloth, and when it’s totally dry, you can add the bag’s “top”, the piece that would be above an old-timey drawstring. Next, scuplt up some soulstones in the bag/surrounding area using gray stuff, and the techniques from the soulstone vein tutorial. Finally, add an old-timey drawstring, if you’re into that sort of thing.

You can also check out the soulstone vein tutorial for some more inspiration on painting these mofos. Basically the stone is washed black and highlighted up to some lighter grays, and the soulstones here are painted blue, getting highlighted to near white at the edges.

Kablam! You’ve got yourself some soulstone bag markers.

  1. As usual, great job! However, I wish you added those goblins to the bases. *Sigh*
